Farewell and good wishes to Warwick
We just wanted to say a quick farewell to Warwick Castle, who have moved to a new website this week. As some of you have guessed we haven’t been involved with this project, but we’ve had a great time working with the Castle over the past few years and wish them very well indeed. We’d also recommend the Castle as a brilliant day out for anyone. Farewell Warwick, and best of luck...

Happy Birthday Mike. We celebrate by playing with one of his presents - note how the window behind Mike is shut… following an unfortunate incident.

Consol goes live :-)
Gosh, it’s dusty in here. We must have been too busy to post anything… what with Christmas, Ney year and everything.  Let me just dust and hoover a little.  . . . Okay, right. Here we are. We built a new site for our friends at Consol before Christmas, here it is: www.consol.eu The project was fab. Lovely people, great product and a nice new HTML 5 website. Enjoy.

It's Neil's fault...
We’d just like to apologise to everyone who visits ThorpePark.com and hears Neil’s insane Hillbilly theme… that NEIL WROTE… without help from ANYONE ELSE at Semantic. This is what happens when you give Garage Band to people without the necessary training. Sorry.

Mental models in Interface Design
Jacob Nielsen posts an interesting piece on mental models, and the problems that occur when a user’s mental model does not match that of the designer. Here’s the summary: What users believe they know about a UI strongly impacts how they use it. Mismatched mental models are common, especially with designs that try something new. We see this occasionally, as users struggle to...

Bombshell: Semantic makes a mistake
Something interesting happened a couple of days ago… we made a mistake. Wooah there Nellie, the mistake isn’t the interesting bit. Of course we make the odd mistake, being human, but in this case even the mistake turned out cool. Here’s what happened… We sent out an email campaign for a client, to 40,000 people, and half of those emails had NO SUBJECT LINE. Balls! Now,...

Email Blahketing
2 days ago this email turned up in my inbox… I wasn’t looking for “professional marketing skills”, and I certainly never signed up to hear from these folks, so I clicked Unsubscribe. Curious, we’ve moved from “Monarch Recruitment” to “Evolution Recruitment Solutions”. Interesting also that my details aren’t actually in this...

Our clients implicated in international conspiracy
As some of you may have noticed our lovely client Foxhills was featured in last night’s episode of Spooks… just a touch different from the meetings we usually have there… but you could see how beautiful a place it is. We’re with you Harry!

Have we turned Spotty and Grumpy?
You may not have noticed us become surly and uncommunicative over the last few weeks, but recently Semantic became a teenager! In 1997 Nick packed his IBM bags and went off to seek his fortune… with hardly an idea in his head if we are brutally honest. But luck, hard work and the early addition of Mike to the team took Semantic though the first 8 years. Since then of course our luck and...

Hi there, a quick reminder for you… We Semantians are out of the office tomorrow (Friday 3rd September), attending the dConstruct 2010 conference. We’ll still be able to answer emails from time to time… but we won’t be able to do development work. cheers, Nick

Farewell Bryony
One of our lovely clients at Usborne is moving roles to become the Marketing Officer for a brand new contemporary art gallery. Here’s what she said about us. My time at Usborne has been fantastic, and so has working with you guys. I can’t thank you enough for all the web support you’ve given me. I wish you all every success for the future – you’re a great, fun and inspirational team and...

James (finally) joins Semantic!
Well… it’s his own fault. James has been a valued member of the Semantic team for almost 9 months now YET he has singularly FAILED to create the About James page Nick has repeatedly requested. “Fair enough” you might say, but in order to save James from one of Nick’s all-too-frequent rages - we have done what any good and true friends would do… we have written it for him while he’s on...

Young Writers Award - perfect for the hols!
And talking of Usborne… If your kids are now on School holidays (like ours) you might be interested in finding them something to do :-) For the last couple of years we’ve worked on the website for Usborne’s Young Writers Award… which is a really cool competition to encourage kids to have a go at finishing a story that one of Usborne’s authors has started. What a...
